Myotherapy Method for Shoulder Impingement.

January 24, 2023

Shoulder impingement is one of the most common symptoms I see in the clinic. This condition can occur in athletes or the general population.

It is now referred to as sub-acromial pain syndrome, as impingement is the symptom and not the diagnosis. This is because the impinging feeling can be caused by a variety of different structures and mechanisms. Shoulder impingement symptoms may be the result of rotator cuff pathology, shoulder instability, scapular instability, scapular dyskinesis or muscle dysfunction, biceps pathology or labral lesions.

During a Myotherapy session the Myotherapist will assess your shoulder to see what structures are causing the shoulder impingement. From there the right shoulder treatment and management plan is chosen for you.

Depending on the cause of the impingement the treatment can involve.

  • Massage and dry needling to decrease pain and release the muscles that have tightened up around the shoulder restricting movement.
  • Joint mobilisation of the thoracic spine, scapular or shoulder joint to allow more free movement.
  • Cupping will be used if a traumatic injury has occurred such as a muscle, tendon or labral tear. This will bring blood flow to the area to promote healing.
  • Exercises will be prescribed best suited to your presenting case. Strengthening is almost always required due to structures being overloaded throughout the shoulder.

If you are experiencing any shoulder pain and have been told that cortisone is the only option then book in an appointment to see what a Myotherapist can do.
