Fascia is a relatively new concept in the health industry. Fascia is connective tissue that looks like a loose jelly-like net. It invests every tissue, surrounds every organ and binds the whole system into shape. Healthy fascia is relaxed, smooth and flexible, allowing optimal body movement.
The connective tissue cells that make up fascia are constantly responding to their mechanical environment. Therefore, if they are constantly put under load from repetitive movement, are in a fixed position due to lack of physical activity or affected during surgery or injury then the fascial properties change. Unhealthy fascia causes the tissue to become thickened and clumped together, this is what we call muscle “knots” trigger points.
WHAT CAN A MYOTHERAPIST DO?
Most people have heard the term “myofascial release” but aren’t sure what it actually means. Myofascial release is a type of treatment that myotherapists commonly use. It is a hands on soft tissue manipulation that works on the fascial system to enhance movement.
It involves a slow continuous stroke, gliding the fascia over the length of the muscles. The myotherapist sinks into the tissue in order to “melt” the fascia. Deep touch melts and hydrates the proteins in the fascia allowing the collagen fibres to slide more easily on each other. Resulting in sustained lengthening of the tissue.
Myofascial release is perfect for postural imbalances and movements that feel restricted.
