Why do we get Injured?

Injuries are a common occurrence, often resulting from either misuse of the body’s biomechanics or prolonged overuse without adequate recovery. Understanding the concepts of acute and chronic overload, as well as differentiating between damage and discomfort, can help us prevent injuries and optimise our performance. Acute Overload: Pushing the Limits Acute overload refers to a single event that surpasses the body’s physical tolerance and capacity, leading to tissue damage. This can occur when an individual experiences a sudden force or impact that exceeds their physiological limits. For example, someone being pushed forcefully and experiencing an ACL rupture. Acute overload injuries typically result from an immediate, excessive stress that the body cannot withstand.

Chronic Overload: The Accumulation of Stress On the other hand, chronic overload injuries develop over a prolonged period, often due to repetitive stress and insufficient recovery. Engaging in activities with suboptimal recovery periods can gradually exceed the body’s capacity to adapt and repair, leading to tissue damage. Chronic overload injuries are commonly seen in athletes or individuals who repeatedly stress specific body parts without allowing sufficient time for recovery.

The Key to Injury Prevention 

The warning signs tolerance comes into play when we start experiencing discomfort, and our brain perceives a potential issue but we do not take appropriate action. Ignoring these warning signs can lead to overload, where the threshold or capacity of the body is surpassed, resulting in injury. Building a solid foundation through proper movement mechanics, progressive training, and recovery strategies is crucial for optimising performance and minimising the chance of overload injuries.

Understanding the interplay between acute and chronic overload, differentiating between damage and discomfort, and recognising the importance of tolerance and capacity can significantly contribute to injury prevention and performance optimisation. By prioritising recovery, maintaining a balanced training regimen, and paying attention to warning signs, we can increase our functional capacity, reduce the risk of injury, and achieve our goals effectively and safely. Remember, the key lies in finding the delicate balance between pushing boundaries and allowing adequate recovery.
